Fields of action for sustainability management

Governance processes define the overarching framework conditions in a research organisation. In order to integrate sustainability into the organisation, the management level is responsible for establishing integrative strategic planning and participatory organisational development.

In order to integrate sustainability into research in the sense of assuming societal responsibility, three fields of action were defined that complement each other: While a culture of scientific integrity forms the basis for implementing good scientific practice, "research with societal responsibility" goes beyond this and aims to systematically reflect on societal responsibility in the research process. This characterises the research process, i.e. the "how" of research. The field of action "Contributing to solutions for societal challenges" deals with the "what" of research, i.e. thematically orientated contributions to solutions by science.

The fields of action in the functional area of staff particularly address the responsibility of the research organisation as an employer towards its employees and thus focus on the societal goals of sustainable development. A prerequisite for this is professional staff management that has sufficient resources to strategically plan and implement staff management activities.

The Buildings and Infrastructures functional area is concerned with the planning, construction and operation of infrastructure based on the principles of sustainable development. The aim here is to provide a future-orientated working environment in line with requirements while taking responsibility for the environment and society. This includes the fulfilment of technical and functional requirements as well as the topics of user satisfaction, energy and resource efficiency, economic efficiency and design and urban development quality.

The Supporting Processes functional area deals with the procurement processes and work-related mobility of research organisations and their indirect impact on the environment and society. The purchase of products and services as well as the mobility needs of employees should be fulfilled in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible manner.
